My kitty has a flea allergy! She had to get a steroid shot she was so itchy. She was VERY SAD. Midnight has been using that to his advantage since he is a Big Boy now and is quite keen to find out if he is top cat or middle cat. (Apollo has made peace with being bottom cat. He doesn't really care so long as he gets brushes and snuggles.)

And now ALL THE PETS (except Rose - having no fur has its advantages) are on flea meds. The vet laughs at all other forms of household flea removal and says this the only way. And he's right. It's a big enough house that there is no way I'm going to get at all the eggs. There is lots of furniture I can't even move! It'll take a few months to get rid of all of them; however many there are - since new ones hatch every few weeks - but eventually all the fleas will get a dose and that'll be it.

Aww, poor Starbuck. She'll always be top cat. Midnight can go duke it out with Ginny. Are they still running around tearing up the house? :-)

Are the steroids okay for the animals? I know they are used with caution in humans. And what does it mean the fleas get a dose of the steroid?

It's interesting having a menagerie!

The fleas have got her down but she still doesn't take shit from Midnight. I've noticed that he refuses to go anywhere near Chicklet's bed because that is Starbuck's territory. And she has us cosseting her since we feel bad she feels bad.

They aren't something you want to use for the heck of it but they can be very helpful and are safe as far as I know. I used them for another cat who had serious arthritis and Starbuck has been scratching enough that she has wounds all around her head - not good. A steroid shot or two to let her heal is completely worth it.

Oh yeah. Interesting. I'm on a first name basis with the whole staff of the vet. :)

By flea meds, do you mean captstar? Because it is seriously awesome when it comes to dealing with fleas, and the vet is completely right. Nothing has ever worked better for me than that--as in, I used it once, and have never had a flea problem since. Everyone should skip the Frontline (it has never worked on any cat I've ever had; they always got them again after a couple weeks) and flea bombs and go straight to capstar.

Nope. I've never even heard of that. We are actually using frontline! It has worked perfectly for the dog (until we got lazy and delayed a dose) so we are using it for the cats as well. I'll keep that in mind though if the frontline doesn't do the trick. And the vet said it would take a while since we need to make it through the flea life cycle a couple of times so as to kill all the eggs.

Frontline does work for dogs; I know my mom has had it work for her. I think with cats they just lick too much of it off or something, because it's never worked for our cats, at least not longterm.

Capstar is pretty awesome, as long as your cat is okay with pills. I got it from my vet, but I think you can get it on Amazon, too.

I was really careful to get the dose applied right at the base of the neck so with any luck they won't be able to lick it off before it gets to soak in. *crosses fingers* And I'm not sure if I want to deal with giving my cats a pill! I haven't had to do that with any of these but my last cat was an expert at pretending to swallow and then shooting it across the room as soon as I let go.

Awww. Poor kitties! Hope you get rid of the fleas quickly!

Me too! The others are just a little itchy but poor Starbuck is miserable.
